Conservation biologist Esme Batten studies and photographs the Saugeen/Bruce Peninsula’s flora and fauna, working to preserve this unique landscape that includes ancient cedars, rare lichen, caves, and two-thirds of all orchid species found in Ontario.
Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory
Stretching like a finger nearly 100 km into Lake Huron, the Saugeen/Bruce Peninsula is an important resting place for migratory birds. Follow the work of Dr. Stéphane Menu at the bird observatory on the peninsula’s northern tip.

Stretching from Niagara to Tobermory, the 900 km Bruce Trail is Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath. It takes over 1,400 volunteers, armed with marking paint, garbage bags and saws to maintain the trail.

Shipping was a key lifeline for early settlers in this area and all ships had to pass through a narrow channel at the top of the Bruce Peninsula. Ships often met with sudden storms and tragic accidents during the last shipping run of the season. Today, there are over two dozen known shipwrecks in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, making this the “freshwater scuba diving capital of the world.”
